Educational Excellence For Girls Of All Ages

Situated in the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city, St George’s School for Girls is a flexible and open learning community which allows our day and boarding students to grow and develop at their own pace and in their own direction. What is wonderful is that much of this community has been inspired by the enterprise and creativity of the students themselves.

    Anne Everest - Head's Message 19-01

The ups and downs of life can be large or small: the uncertainties that the world's economies face presently affect us all to some extent, and the effects can be catastrophic; likewise, a small uplifting event can put a smile on the face of a few individuals, while leaving the rest of the globe unimpressed.

In a close-knit community such as ours, when one group is affected by good or bad fortune, the whole school rises to the challenge of giving support, sympathy and encouragement. When a community is strong, that support can be considerable and, often, difficult times bring out the best in us.

P4's WW II Drama Workshop 2012

St George's Primary 4 have just taken part in a special drama workshop covering certain aspects of the history of World War II, from pre-war home life and radio broadcasts at the outbreak of the war, to rationing and the Anderson bomb shelter.

In the first years of the Blitz, (Blitz was the German word for 'lightning'), Anderson shelters were provided by the government, and 150,000 of these were distributed to houses with gardens. They were constructed of corrugated iron, many quite poorly, and were usually cold and damp, but they did provide a little private shelter for those who had them ...

    Little Learners

The Parent and Baby/Toddler group, known as St George's Little Learners, has started up again after a happy Christmas break. The group met last term in the library but we are happy to say that we can now accommodate them in the Nursery. This means they have wider opportunities to do all kinds of innovative activities. They started last Friday with some cupcake icing under the guidance of one of our parents, Cheryl Porphyre.

Parents, babies and toddlers had an amazing time as the pictures illustrate. Parents enjoyed coffee and a chat too.

  • Bursary Fund

We hope you may wish to contribute to our bursary fund, which helps to support new students from families on lower incomes and current students who face financial difficulties. In these uncertain times, we can never be sure who may need financial help. It is also important that the school provide bursary money so that it may keep its charitable status, which will help to ensure St George's future success, whatever the economy's ups and downs.  To make giving to the bursary fund as simple as possible, we now have this "Just Giving" link. Thank you for your support.

  • Why Single Sex?

We put girls first by design, and aim to give each one the confidence and competence to fulfil her potential today, and for the rest of her life.

The benefits of a single-sex education for girls have been demonstrated in important research published by the Institute of Education at the University of London in 2006.

This revealed that girls in single-sex schools were more likely to study subjects they enjoyed and were good at, rather than allowing gender stereotypes to influence them.
