Educational Excellence For Girls Of All Ages

Situated in the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city, St George’s School for Girls is a flexible and open learning community which allows our day and boarding students to grow and develop at their own pace and in their own direction. What is wonderful is that much of this community has been inspired by the enterprise and creativity of the students themselves.

    Anne Everest - Head's Message 06-02

This week marks sixty years since Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, acceded to the throne. Her father, George VI, died on 6 February 1952, while his 25 year old daughter, and heir to the throne, was away in Kenya. As is the British custom, there was no gap between reigns: although Elizabeth would not be crowned until June 1953, she became Queen of the United Kingdom the moment her father died.

This year then, we celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. We have an extra holiday to mark the occasion and it seems right that we should look back and admire a long-lived monarch who has put her country - and her duty to that country and its people - first, for sixty years.

    Stem Careers Event

    Maths, Science, Engineering and Technology.

St George's school is providing a chance for students to come along to listen, and to talk to, representatives from universities and employers about opportunities in maths, science and engineering. The Upper 5 will be attending the seminars during the morning, but there has been time allocated for all girls over the lunch hour in Upper 4 to Upper 6 to question the visitors or just collect information. This is an excellent opportunity for all students to widen their awareness of the huge range of courses and careers open to them.

    Donation To Fresh Start

On the 7 February 2012, the Charities committee presented a cheque for £775 to Mr Stuart Fergusson from Fresh Start. We raised this amount at the Lower School Carol service from the kind donations from Lower School families. We thought very hard and decided the money should go to Fresh Start.

Fresh Start helps people who lose their jobs and homes. They give them items they will need to help set up their new home. Mr Fergusson talked about a girl named Julie and her family and how Julie's family lost their house and her dad lost his job. We hope we have helped their family and many others, and we are happy we gave the money to Fresh Start to help families that live in difficult situations.

    Celebrating Chinese New Year

The Year of the Dragon has certainly begun in an energetic way for Edinburgh City schools, supported by the Confucius Hub for Edinburgh City, St George's School for Girls. The activities included a presentation by a primary 2 and 3 class at Preston Street School, of a play reflecting the story of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. The pupils have learnt simple Chinese phrases, numbers 1-10, and also about Chinese culture. They shared their learning with the school on Monday 23 January, the first day of the Chinese New Year, the year of the Water Dragon. The theme which the class has been considering has been: "Respecting the rights and customs of others".

  • Bursary Fund

We hope you may wish to contribute to our bursary fund, which helps to support new students from families on lower incomes and current students who face financial difficulties. In these uncertain times, we can never be sure who may need financial help. It is also important that the school provide bursary money so that it may keep its charitable status, which will help to ensure St George's future success, whatever the economy's ups and downs.  To make giving to the bursary fund as simple as possible, we now have this "Just Giving" link. Thank you for your support.

  • Why Single Sex?

We put girls first by design, and aim to give each one the confidence and competence to fulfil her potential today, and for the rest of her life.

The benefits of a single-sex education for girls have been demonstrated in important research published by the Institute of Education at the University of London in 2006.

This revealed that girls in single-sex schools were more likely to study subjects they enjoyed and were good at, rather than allowing gender stereotypes to influence them.
