Campus & Facilities

St George's School is situated on the west of the City of
Edinburgh in Ravelston and Murrayfield residential areas of
the city.
St George's School moved to its present site on Windmill Brae in
1914 into a purpose built building designed by the architect
Balfour Paul in accordance with 'the most modern ideas in regard to
educational requirements.'
The stated aim of the school at that time was 'to provide a
scheme of education the governing principle of which should be the
training of character and preparation for the responsibilities of
life'.
Since then the school has expanded to cover almost 15 acres of
land in the Murrayfield area and has never lost site of this
original aim.
Our present use of facilities reflects the fact that 21st
Century education must break away from traditional approaches to
learning in which children were boxed in by classrooms and lessons
and strives to combine the old and new to create a dynamic,
innovative and high quality learning environment for our whole
community.
Teaching and learning is carried out throughout Junior, Lower
and Upper School in well equipped rooms, where staff and students
are encouraged to adopt an open door flexible approach making
learning as accessible as possible to all.
Extensive IT Facilities
The use of IT is prevalent throughout school with the addition
of a dedicated IT room in Junior School, one in Lower School and 3
in Upper School, while over 50 rooms throughout school are now
equipped with safe 'short-throw' projectors and interactive white
boards.
The Campus comprises the Main School Campus and the Lansdowne
Campus.
The Main School Campus accommodates the Early Years, Junior
School, and Upper School students, while the Lansdowne
Campus accommodates the Lower School students.
Main School Campus
The Early Years and Junior
School Building accommodates the Early Years and
Primary 1 - Primary 5. Each class has their own room
and everyone has access to the dual purpose Hall and Gym,
the Library, the Information Technology Centre and the Support for
Learning area.
The Early Years have their own outside play area, and the
surface in the play area for the Junior School has been upgraded in
Summer 2004.
The Upper School
was built in 1914 as a purpose built school, and is now a
Grade B listed building. It comprises the general purpose
teaching areas and also the Hall, the Main Gymnasium, the Science
Laboratories, the Library and the Sixth Form Study rooms. The Upper
School also has a number of rooms equipped with networked
computers.
The Languages wing was refurbished and opened by Mrs Moyra
MacFarlane, HM Consul General, Florence in Feb 2004. The Science
Laboratories have been refurbished in the last few years, and were
officially opened by Professor E.A.V. Ebsworth, Vice
Chancellor and Warden of the University of Durham in
1997.
The Robertson Music Centre
(RMC) was built in 1989 with a large donation from the
Robertson sisters, and comprises an auditorium with seating for
200, plus several large classrooms and a number of smaller rooms
for individual music lessons. The building also recently
aquired useful music recording facilities.
The Art Block
was built in 1985 and comprises 4 airy art studios,
a kiln room and a small art library. Here under the
guidance of specialist art staff students have the opportunity to
work in a wide range of materials and across various disciplines
including drawing and painting, textiles, graphic design, fashion,
ceramics, printmaking, sculpture and 3 dimensional design.
In the Junior School art is incorporated into the daily
programme but as from the start of session 2007 / 8 the Junior
School will benefit from the addition of a dedicated art studio and
their own specialist art teacher.
Our art staff encourage students to make as full use of the
studios as they can and offer break, lunch - time and after school
slots for students to come and continue their work.
Sports
facilities comprise the sports block housing a
large indoor general purpose court area, and two squash courts and
changing rooms. Outside there is a large grassed area
and an all-weather pitch which is used for hockey
and lacrosse in the winter and tennis in the summer.
The St George's
Centre was opened in February 2000 and provides the
dining
facilitiesfor all students and staff, as well as an area for
hosting special large scale dinning events and other
proceedings.
On the lower level there is a large space,
with foldaway raked seating for 62
and further seating space for 150. It can be used for
anything from plays to large scale meetings.
This "Lower Centre" space has recently been
re-equipped as a dedicated Drama Studio, and has wired and
wireless networking plus audio visual facilities, including the
option to make use of video conferencing.
