HSBC - British Council Mandarin Speaking Competition
15 February 2011
On the 8th of February, a group of girls from St George's
travelled to the Northern Regional Heat of the HSBC / British
Council Mandarin-Chinese speaking competition. The heat covered
Scotland and Northern England and was held at Newcastle
There were two categories for the competition, the 'Individual
Language Ability' and the 'Group Ability'. For the Group Ability, a
team of students needed to carry a short presentation in Mandarin,
about five minutes long. The St George's group preformed well after
having worked very hard leading up to the competition, however
narrowly failed to get through to the final.
In the 'Individual Ability' category there were three
sub-sections, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. Megan of
L5X entered the "Beginner's" heat and Noor of U5 entered the
"Intermediate" heat. Both of the individual ability section girls
won their heats and are therefore progressing into the final which
is being held in the British National Museum in London on the 12th
of March 2011.
Congratulations to all the girls on a great effort all round,
and we wish the best of luck to both St George's girls in the
upcoming Individual Ability finals.
